As a kid, I visited Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum (now just called The Henry Ford) many times. They're both located in Dearborn, Michigan. My family went for outings since we lived so close, but the schools I attended would also take us on field trips usually associated with history or science classes.
Greenfield Village is the outdoor living history portion of the museum. There are many historic buildings having to do with early inventors that were moved to the Dearborn location including Thomas Edison's Menlo Park laboratory, the Wright Brothers' bicycle shop and home, and auto maker Henry Ford's early buildings. There are also employees in period costume who demonstrate early American farming, handicrafts, and cooking. Some of the yearly events include Civil War Remembrance, Summer Camp for kids, an Independence Day celebration, and historic holiday celebrations for Halloween and Christmas. Here's an intro to the Village.
As you might imagine, living in the Metro Detroit area involved a lot of talk about cars. The Henry Ford has examples of vehicles throughout our history including some very well known ones such as Rosa Parks' bus and the presidential limousine of John F. Kennedy. It also includes other historical exhibits including the Dymaxion house, which my husband and I got a kick out of. Below is a video of a quick tour of the house, but the entire first season of The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation is full of coverage of the many exhibits and innovators featured there.
This post is my entry number 16 in the Fannish Fifty Challenge.
