70 degrees in Michigan in the first week of March, OMG! An iris bulb is already peaking through the soil in the front yard. I'm so glad I'm having more good knee days rather than bad so I can enjoy walking.

With being distracted by the last few months of employment hullabaloo, I haven't been paying much attention to the garden except for some weeding. I realized I had a mutant beet that needed harvesting. I did the following:

  • Honey and cinnamon roasted beetroot.
  • Beet green chips, which are basically roasted leaves that I lightly coated in olive oil, salt, and pepper.
  • Saved some greens in the fridge for salads and sautéing.
  • Blanched and vacuum sealed three sets of leaves to freeze for later use.

Here's the pic. The one beet with greens practically took over the stovetop.

A brief storm with heavy winds caused a little damage in the yard. We were very lucky compared to other areas. The good portion of the elderberry bush snapped near the bottom, so I doubt I'll get much of a harvest from the other section that survived. The basil and surviving beets were blown to the side, but I might be able to salvage some more.

As a kid, I visited Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum (now just called The Henry Ford) many times. They're both located in Dearborn, Michigan. My family went for outings since we lived so close, but the schools I attended would also take us on field trips usually associated with history or science classes.

Greenfield Village is the outdoor living history portion of the museum. There are many historic buildings having to do with early inventors that were moved to the Dearborn location including Thomas Edison's Menlo Park laboratory, the Wright Brothers' bicycle shop and home, and auto maker Henry Ford's early buildings. There are also employees in period costume who demonstrate early American farming, handicrafts, and cooking. Some of the yearly events include Civil War Remembrance, Summer Camp for kids, an Independence Day celebration, and historic holiday celebrations for Halloween and Christmas. Here's an intro to the Village.

As you might imagine, living in the Metro Detroit area involved a lot of talk about cars. The Henry Ford has examples of vehicles throughout our history including some very well known ones such as Rosa Parks' bus and the presidential limousine of John F. Kennedy. It also includes other historical exhibits including the Dymaxion house, which my husband and I got a kick out of. Below is a video of a quick tour of the house, but the entire first season of The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation is full of coverage of the many exhibits and innovators featured there.

This post is my entry number 16 in the Fannish Fifty Challenge.
